Rainbow zigzag metamaterial beams as broadband vibration isolators for beam-like structures

Phononic crystals (PCs) and metamaterials are artificially structured materials with the unprecedented property of existence complete stop-bands. However, generally narrow width stop-bands in such severely limits their applicability. Here, a particular kind gradient zigzag metamaterial beams exclusively flat bands within broad frequency range is proposed based upon our previously uniform counterparts. The calculated band structures by Finite Element Method (FEM) Spectral (SEM) show distinctly different characteristics from conventional PCs metamaterials, where totally filled without normal pass bands. These caused local resonance certain parts beams, elastic waves frequencies at these trapped resonant cannot propagate. As result, can be used as broadband vibration isolators for beam-like structures, which verified both numerical simulations experiments conducted on 3D-printed samples. This design strategy opens new avenue designing constructing novel isolators.
